This Native American carving I just finished today.  It has been hard this week to find the time to finish this project, but I am glad I did. I enjoyed the transformation from bark to face.

This is how it all began. I tried something I had not done before. To get the rough shape I used a skil saw. It seemed to work pretty well.

I did not use any dremel tools on this carving. Back to what I am most comfortable with. (but I know there will be more power tools in the future)

You can start to see the where they eyes will be and  the nose is starting to take place.

The neck and the head dress are starting to form.

If you look closely you can see where I have drawn in the hair and other parts on the face.

You can now see the hair.

He can breath! I love to get the nose and eyes in place.  I have to tell myself to get the shape first and then worry about the details.

I have drawn the eyes in place and you now see the lips.

In the previous couple of pictures you can see the headdress and eyes are now in place.

Everything is in place all! Just need to put the finish on and I am done. Go look at ebay to see the finished product.

I found some drift wood that I thought might be interesting to start to carve.  I started to carve into the pieced of wood and it was still a little wet. So I just left it until this week. It dried out and I used a dremel for the first time just to try it out.  I do not have any pictures of the progression because I was not sure how things would turn out (you can be the judge of that).  This piece of wood looks like a beaver got a hold of it.

This piece was carved using a dremel tool.

Here was the first of the three pieces that was carved. (It was a nice change of pace to try something new.)

The baseball hat is something I like to do every once in a while.

I have not carved many wildlife scenes, but it is something I would like to start doing more of.  This little cub stranded in a tree has made excited to carve some more. I am going to Tyler Borg (see his work on a previous post) help me out with some more detail on my next wildlife scene.

This little guy was not done with a dremel, but I found these pieces of wood in the same reservoir.

The carving for June 21 is just below this post.

Tyler Borg is the artist and master carver that has helped me get to where I am today in the carving progress. If you get a chance take a look at his website www.tylerborgwoodcarving.com. He is amazing!! I have put just a few pictures of his carvings on this page. I hope you enjoy and thanks for the help Tyler!

Lady of the day.
This has been an interesting piece of bark to carve.  It may have been the ugliest start of a  carving I have had for a long time.  With that being said I am sometimes shocked at the transformation that has come with this old lady. She has curlers in her hair and a little shocked at her own beauty.

I think this looked more like a mummy than a lady but I am just trying to get the shape of the head right now.

Less like a mummy and more like a pirate.  You can now start to see the form.

I am just starting to put in the curlers and smooth the face out just a little.

Curlers are almost done and there is a face in a piece of wood. It still needs some details and I realized that she might need a neck.

This lady now has a neck, blouse and even some eyeballs. She is about ready to get some color.

I carved a little to deep around the neck and found the light at the end of the tunnel.
